ASSET Team Brings Innovative Science Modules to Science Teachers Across the Country

November, 2024

The ASSET teaching team, Teacher Leaders Anne Deken, and Courtney Hausner, and Instructional Specialist Alex Forgerson recently showcased their expertise and innovative teaching strategies at two major science education conferences.

On Saturday, November 2, the team presented at the Science Teachers of Missouri (STOM) conference held at Columbia College. A week later, on Saturday, November 9, they shared their insights at the National Science Teaching Association (NSTA) conference in New Orleans, at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center.

The modules presented at both conferences were “Osmolarity-5E” and “Effect of Alcohol, Smoking & Vaping-5E”. These presentations provided attendees with hands-on learning experiences and practical teaching resources (5E lesson modules, student handouts, and even slideshows). These new 5E modules are aligned with NGSS (Next Generation Science Standards), and use the model organism Tetrahymena to engage students in exploring cell processes, the impacts of substances like alcohol and vaping, and scientific inquiry.

Both modules are part of the ASSET program; the program offers free, high-quality lab kits and lesson plans to educators, emphasizing accessibility and active student engagement.
